Venus Williams, 45, Awarded Wild Card for Her Initial Australian Open in Half a Decade.
Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.
A Landmark Return to Melbourne Park
Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.
Preparing for the Australian Summer
Venus had previously revealed in the month of November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. The Australian Open noted that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I’m excited to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating playing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to go back to a venue that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has appeared in the primary tournament field.
Setting a Fresh Benchmark
The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the mark formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
