A large-scale search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a pair of unlocated sailboats loaded with aid cargo journeying from Mexico to Havana.

Maritime Search Efforts Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has sent navy personnel and search planes to locate the missing boats, which were transporting no fewer than 9 personnel, according to a official statement.

The ships had been scheduled to arrive in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their docking, the navy said.

Background of Relief to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the island endures widespread power outages across the country.

"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and each boat are equipped with proper safety equipment and emergency beacons," a spokesperson involved in the effort stated.

The nine-person crew are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from each country along with their embassy officials.

"We are co-operating fully with the authorities and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Previous Relief Mission

Earlier in the week, the government in Havana widely celebrated and warmly received another boat that had carried 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the island.

That vessel, nicknamed "a modern Granma" in reference to the yacht in which Castro landed in Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, brought solar equipment, medicines, infant formula, bicycles and provisions.

Broader Geopolitical Context

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led initiatives to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

The United Nations have since raised alarms about ""critical" lack of essential goods, with in excess of fifty thousand surgeries postponed in Cuba because of energy rationing.

Foreign policy pressure have been ramped up lately, with remarks from different representatives emphasizing the delicate state of diplomatic ties.

In response to recent statements, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of talks were initiated, although their current progress remains unclear.

The naval forces stated it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to find the sailboats and ensure the well-being of the sailors.

As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
