Formal charges have been brought against two men following a suitcase robbery where a substance thought to be irritant spray led to people being hurt at the UK's busiest airport.

Tyrone Richards, 31, and Anton Clarke-Butcher, 24, now face two robbery charges and two counts of deploying a toxic agent, as confirmed by court officials.

The charges follow an investigation into an assault at the multi-storey car park at Terminal 3 on the weekend. Prior to the attack, two women were robbed of their luggage stolen after getting out of a parking garage elevator, police said.

A three-year-old girl was one of the people hurt during the incident. A total of five individuals were taken to a medical facility and were eventually allowed to go home.

The incident – described by police as was a standalone event and not being treated as terrorism – caused disruptions to rail services and the partial closure of the Central Terminal Area tunnel and the Terminal 3 car park for a limited duration.
