This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the identical stature as pardoning festive fowl, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life free from concern.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The craze became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, varied, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Every time, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
