Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is exiting the governing body at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of electronic messages between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became public.
He commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate following their progress".
Summers, who previously led Harvard University, announced on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed emails revealed that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the day before his 2019 detention for accused human trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected his choice to step down.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the insight he offered to the governing body," the organization commented.
Congressional Action
This development follows after both chambers of Congress voted on recently to endorse a bill that would compel the Department of Justice to disclose its documents on the case.
The bill will afterward head to the administration of US President Donald Trump for approval. Trump has indicated he intends to sign the bill, after modifying his position on the issue following objections from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-related emails disclosed by the Congressional committee last week mentioned numerous high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without implying any criminal activity by those individuals.
The messages indicated that Summers and Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often seeking to link the academic to influential international personalities.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were released with the wider community, he expressed he assumed "complete accountability for my misguided choice to continue communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he hoped "to rebuild faith and fix relationships with the persons most important to me".
Professional History
Summers served in high-level positions under party leaders; serving as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He led Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a academic there. When stating his step-down from public roles previously on Monday, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal research organization in DC where he was a senior fellow, announced that he was not associated with the institution.
He joined the directorate of the technology firm, which creates ChatGPT, in last year - following a defeated move to oust its top executive OpenAI's head.
