France calls on nationals to evacuate Mali urgently during militant gasoline embargo

Long queues have been snaking around petrol stations

France has issued an pressing recommendation for its citizens in Mali to evacuate as soon as feasible, as Islamist insurgents continue their embargo of the nation.

The France's diplomatic corps recommended individuals to leave using aviation transport while they remain available, and to avoid surface transportation.

Fuel Crisis Intensifies

A two-month-old fuel blockade on Mali, established by an al-Qaeda-affiliated faction has disrupted routine existence in the main city, the capital city, and other regions of the surrounded West African country - a ex-colonial possession.

France's statement occurred alongside MSC - the largest global shipping company - announcing it was suspending its activities in Mali, citing the restriction and deteriorating security.

Insurgent Actions

The jihadist group the Islamist alliance has caused the obstruction by attacking petroleum vehicles on main routes.

Mali has limited sea access so each gasoline shipment are delivered by road from neighboring states such as Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire.

International Response

Last month, the American diplomatic mission in the capital declared that non-essential diplomatic staff and their families would leave Mali amid the emergency.

It mentioned the petroleum interruptions had impacted the power availability and had the "potential to disrupt" the "comprehensive stability environment" in "unforeseen manners".

Governance Situation

The West African nation is currently ruled by a military junta commanded by the military leader, who first seized power in a government overthrow in 2020.

The military council had civilian backing when it gained authority, promising to handle the long-running security crisis triggered by a separatist rebellion in the northern region by nomadic populations, which was subsequently taken over by jihadist fighters.

Global Involvement

The UN peacekeeping mission and Paris's troops had been stationed in the past decade to deal with the increasing militant activity.

Both have departed since the armed leadership gained power, and the armed forces administration has contracted Moscow-aligned fighters to tackle the safety concerns.

However, the jihadist insurgency has persisted and significant areas of the northern and eastern territories of the nation remain beyond state authority.
