Delving into the Globe's Spookiest Grove: Contorted Trees, UFOs and Eerie Tales in Romania's Legendary Region.

"Locals dub this location an enigmatic zone of Transylvania," states a tour guide, his breath creating wisps of condensation in the cold evening air. "So many people have gone missing here, it's thought it's an entrance to another dimension." Marius is leading a guest on a nocturnal tour through frequently labeled as the globe's spookiest grove: Hoia-Baciu, an area covering one square mile of primeval indigenous forest on the fringes of the Transylvanian city of Cluj-Napoca.

A Long History of the Unexplained

Accounts of unusual events here date back a long time – this woodland is titled for a local shepherd who is said to have vanished in the long ago, together with two hundred animals. But Hoia-Baciu achieved worldwide fame in 1968, when a defense worker called Emil Barnea captured on film what he described as a UFO floating above a circular clearing in the middle of the forest.

Many came in here and failed to return. But no need to fear," he adds, turning to the traveler with a grin. "Our guided walks have a perfect safety record."

In the decades since, Hoia-Baciu has drawn yogis, spiritual healers, UFO researchers and ghost hunters from around the globe, curious to experience the strange energies said to echo through the forest.

Contemporary Dangers

Despite being one of the world's premier pilgrimage sites for lovers of the paranormal, this woodland is facing danger. The western suburbs of Cluj-Napoca – a modern tech hub of more than 400,000 people, known as the Silicon Valley of Eastern Europe – are encroaching, and construction companies are advocating for approval to clear the trees to construct residential buildings.

Aside from a small area home to area-specific specific tree species, this woodland is lacking legal protection, but Marius believes that the organization he helped establish – the Hoia-Baciu Project – will help to change that, persuading the local administrators to acknowledge the forest's significance as a travel hotspot.

Spooky Experiences

As twigs and fall foliage split and rustle beneath their footwear, the guide tells numerous local legends and reported ghostly incidents here.

  • One famous story describes a young child going missing during a family outing, later to rematerialise five years later with no recollection of what had happened, without aging a moment, her attire lacking the smallest trace of dirt.
  • Regular stories describe smartphones and photography gear inexplicably shutting down on entering the woods.
  • Emotional responses include full-blown dread to states of ecstasy.
  • Certain individuals state noticing strange rashes on their arms, perceiving ghostly voices through the forest, or experience palms pushing them, despite being sure they are alone.

Research Efforts

Although numerous of the stories may be impossible to confirm, there is much clearly observable that is undeniably strange. Throughout the area are plants whose stems are warped and gnarled into bizarre configurations.

Different theories have been given to explain the deformed trees: that hurricane winds could have altered the growth, or typically increased electromagnetic fields in the earth explain their crooked growth.

But formal examinations have turned up no satisfactory evidence.

The Legendary Opening

Marius's walks enable visitors to participate in a small-scale research of their own. Upon reaching the opening in the forest where Barnea took his famous UFO pictures, he passes the traveler an ghost-hunting device which detects energy patterns.

"We're stepping into the most powerful section of the forest," he comments. "See what you can find."

The vegetation suddenly stop dead as the group enters into a complete ring. The only greenery is the short grass beneath the ground; it's apparent that it's naturally occurring, and looks that this unusual opening is organic, not the creation of people.

Fact Versus Fiction

Transylvania generally is a area which inspires creativity, where the division is indistinct between reality and legend. In countryside villages faith continues in strigoi ("screamers") – supernatural, form-changing vampires, who return from burial sites to terrorise regional populations.

Bram Stoker's famous character Dracula is forever associated with Transylvania, and Bran Castle – an ancient structure located on a rocky outcrop in the mountain range – is heavily promoted as "the vampire's home".

But including legend-filled Transylvania – literally, "the place beyond the forest" – appears tangible and comprehensible in contrast to this spooky forest, which give the impression of being, for reasons nuclear, climatic or purely mythical, a hub for creative energy.

"Inside these woods," Marius states, "the boundary between reality and imagination is very thin."
